How the Fuck Did I Get So Lost? — EP. 1: All Those Rituals, and I Still Had to Do It Myself

Today, after disappearing for a few days, I’m going to sit down and expose myself to you guys.

Looking back, this story is actually pretty fucking funny.

Whenever I wanted something, my first thought wasn’t, What do I need to do to make it happen?

It was, Where should I go to pray? What ritual should I perform? Which deity should I ask for help?

At the time, I didn’t think I was lost or superstitious. This was simply the culture I grew up with.

Whenever things didn’t go my way, I never stopped to ask what the actual problem was. I just went looking for another ritual to perform.

When it came to that kind of determination, I was number fucking one.

Before we go any further, let me give you some background about where I come from.

If you’ve seen The White Lotus Season 3, then you’ve already seen it—my country, Thailand.

And honestly, the show did a pretty good job. There are scenes where hotel staff take guests to pray to a deity, people talk about meditating at Buddhist temples, blah, blah, blah.

And to my Thai friends: don’t get confused or silently accuse me of being pretentious. I’m explaining this for my international friends too, okay?

Anyway, back to the question: where the fuck did I pick up this habit?

From childhood, I was taught to visit temples and pray to Buddha statues and the deities inside them. I was taught to ask them to kindly bless me with a comfortable life, wealth, success, and a good partner.

I should make it clear that this wasn’t something my family specifically taught me. It was simply part of the culture, passed down from one person to another.

Basically, we were taught to ask.

But we weren’t really taught to believe that we were already good enough or capable enough to create the things we wanted for ourselves.

Looking back, it feels like having the same idea quietly planted in your head every single day:

You can’t manage your life on your own. Something has to help you. Someone has to bless you. Some invisible force has to push your life forward.

The result?

My ability to deal with real life was absolute shit.

These days, whenever someone comes to talk to me, I always say the same thing:

Go ahead and pray. I’m not stopping you.

But after you’ve finished praying, don’t forget to believe that you can do it too. Don’t forget to work your ass off. And don’t forget to use your own fucking brain to solve the problem first.

We’re not that fucking useless.

Anyway, after everything I’ve just told you, I hope the deities in your countries don’t have to work as hard as the ones in mine.

I don’t think our gods get holidays.

They’re on duty twenty-four hours a day. No holidays, no annual leave, no social security.

Honestly, I feel a little sorry for them. Hahaha.

Oh, and there’s more.

We haven’t even reached the fucking climax yet.

We weren’t only taught to believe in things we couldn’t see. We were also taught to be afraid.

Afraid that our lives would go downhill.

Make merit and your life will improve.

Offer candles or lamps and your life will be filled with light.

Want a good relationship? Offer a matching pair of vases.

That kind of shit.

But seriously—is that really how it works?

Why not teach people to look at which of their own shitty habits might drag their lives downhill? Why not teach them how they need to behave if they want their lives to improve?

And for fuck’s sake, you can offer ten pairs of matching vases, but if you’re still selfish, refuse to listen to anyone, and are ready to lose your shit at your partner every five minutes, when exactly is your relationship supposed to get better?

This stuff is pretty wild when you stop and think about it.

Does your country have anything this ridiculous? Tell me in the comments. I want to stick my nose into other people’s religions for a change.

Let me squeeze in something vaguely educational here.

Actual Buddhist teachings don’t really work like that. A lot of them make perfect sense from a psychological point of view.

Do good things, and decent people are more likely to gather around you.

Act like an asshole, and your life will probably fill up with assholes and all kinds of shitty situations.

If you want your life to improve, you have to do something about it yourself. If you want to suffer less, you first have to recognize what the fuck you’re clinging to.

It really isn’t that complicated.

Buddhism is very minimalist, you guys.

But as these ideas were passed from one person to another, with a little of this and a little of that added along the way, giving became a transaction.

Doing good became something we did because we expected a reward.

And the actual heart of Buddhism in my country slowly became harder and harder to see.

Fucking depressing.

And you see what happens next, right?

When people are taught to keep asking, to live in fear, and to believe they can’t manage their own lives, the people who make money from those beliefs suddenly find themselves with a massive fucking market.

You get wealthy investors profiting from temples. You get monks who specialize in rituals and end up sitting on nearly a billion baht.

Fabulous, right?

Meanwhile, the people paying for the rituals can barely afford to fucking eat.

But I can’t dump all the blame on religion, culture, and the people profiting from it either.

Plenty of people grew up surrounded by exactly the same beliefs, and they didn’t hand their entire lives over to rituals.

So am I writing this because I’ve always been incredibly intelligent?

Absolutely fucking not. Hahahahaha.

I used to be one of that market’s finest customers.

If someone said a ritual worked, I was ready. If someone said a temple was amazing, I was already on my way.

It wasn’t only because I had been taught to ask for things since childhood.

Deep down, I never truly believed that I could make things happen by myself.

I looked confident.

But underneath all that?

Not at all.

This stuff was incredibly easy to sell to me because it matched the habits I already had.

Someone would say, Perform this ritual and your life will improve. Pray at this place and your wish will come true. Offer this particular thing and you’ll get what you want.

And off I fucking went.

If one tiny good thing happened afterwards, I immediately decided the ritual had worked.

If absolutely nothing happened, I conveniently forgot about it and went searching for a new ritual instead.

And even when I claimed that something had “worked,” half the time the result still wasn’t worth the money I’d spent on the damn ritual.

Did I ever stop to calculate that?

Of course not. Hahaha.

Fucking stupid.

But if I’d never been stupid, how could I have become as intelligent as I am today?

Am I right?

You may applaud my brilliance now.

Even if it did arrive a little fucking late.

Looking back, I can’t blame everything on deities or the culture that shaped me.

Because ultimately, my own habits were part of the problem too.

I believed things too easily and eventually stopped using my own fucking brain.

I kept asking instead of taking action.

I performed rituals instead of gaining knowledge.

I kept hoping everything would turn out well, but I never stopped to ask whether there was something wrong with what I was doing—or whether there was something I still needed to learn.

Now you might be wondering how I finally became so incredibly intelligent.

It’s because something big happened in my life that went completely against my expectations.

That time, no matter how much I prayed, begged, made offerings, or performed rituals, no deity could magically make things turn out the way I wanted.

And just like that—

My eyes finally fucking opened.

But you guys, this story is already getting ridiculously long. If I keep going today, I’ll end up writing an entire book called The Biography of My Bad Decisions.

So I’ll come back in the next episode and tell you what the fuck happened—and what finally made me start asking myself:

Were the deities refusing to help me, or had I simply never learned how to help myself properly?

Writers are always hungry. Please show mercy.
