Let me carry on before I lose the fucking urge to tell this story. Losing momentum is one of my bad habits. If I don’t finish something quickly, I start running out of steam halfway through.
Anyway, now that I’ve told you it took a major life event to wake me the fuck up, let’s see just how unhinged I was before that. Hahaha.
Honestly, I should’ve caught on to the whole ritual thing ages ago. There were plenty of times when those rituals did fuck all, but I still chose to shut my eyes and keep going.
As for the thing that finally woke me up, other people might not even think it was a big deal. You might read this and go, “Bitch, that’s such an easy fix.” But for me, at the time, it was a lot.
Most of my life, I’d pretty much always gotten what I wanted without having to try very hard. So of course I had this lovely, delusional idea that everything I did would turn out exactly how I wanted.
Back then, I was making organic skincare products with the intention of selling them overseas. My expectations were through the fucking roof. I thought all I had to do was show up at a trade fair and everything would be fabulous immediately. I trusted my taste that much.
Mind you, I’d never even sold the stuff in my own country.
I’d flown out to check out trade fairs, and I had quite a few friends abroad who were in that kind of business. But here’s the thing: they’d been doing it for ten fucking years.
And me? Zero experience, babes.
I put real effort into the products. But every other part of running a business? Didn’t know shit. Meanwhile, I was fully booked on my spiritual world tour. Praying to gods, making offerings, visiting temples. Whatever the ritual was, I went all in.
When what I actually needed to do was learn how to run a fucking business.
So tell me, how exactly was this supposed to go perfectly on the first try?
I also wasn’t a Plan B kind of person. Actually, let’s just say I’d never fucking heard of Plan B in my life.
So when I’d built my expectations that high and nothing went the way I wanted—no customers buying my stuff, nothing—I freaked the fuck out. Hahaha.
Because selling at these trade fairs takes experience. There’s stuff like how many years you need to keep showing up before buyers will actually buy from you. They’re worried you might go under halfway through, too. Things like that. I knew none of it.
And babes, I’d poured every last bit of my savings into this.
You can’t fucking do that. To be fair, this was over ten years ago. We didn’t have people all over social media sharing business advice the way we do now. But whatever. It’s in the past.
And on top of having absolutely no backup plan for what I’d do if the products didn’t sell, my problem-solving skills were fucking tragic. I’d never really had to fight my way through anything on my own.
So it felt like that was it. The whole fucking world was over. Hahahaha.
I chose not to tell anyone what was going on. Just kept everything to myself. But that’s how things were in my family. We were always taught that other people didn’t need to know about our problems. My parents’ generation would try to sort everything out themselves, worried about what people might think.
But let me tell you something: unless you’ve fucking killed someone, you’re allowed to talk about your problems, babes.
Sometimes I think about how, if I’d told my friends back then, plenty of them could’ve helped me figure out what to do. My friends are helpful people anyway. Hahaha. But how were they supposed to know I needed help?
Instead, I spent fucking ages in shock. I’d never had anything go this badly against my expectations, so I just chose to suffer alone.
Bitch, just like the soap operas I watched every day. Actually, maybe those fucking shows were part of the problem. Look at me blaming everything. Hahaha. I mean, how long am I supposed to keep blaming myself, right? Hahahaha.
(I’m fucking joking.)
You dumb bitch.
That’s me talking to my past self, by the way. Not you lot.
So let me say it again: when you have a problem, big or small, tell someone. Trust me.
Better to look stupid for a minute than stay stupid for years like I did.
And that’s what happened before my grand awakening. Back then, I just kept going round and round in my head: why weren’t the gods helping me?
If I’d spent this much on a guy at a host bar, surely I’d at least get to hold his fucking hand?
While I was still miserable, all I could think was: I prayed, I made offerings, I paid. So why had I fallen flat on my fucking face with absolutely nothing to show for it?
Had the gods betrayed me?
Or had they never fucking existed in the first place?
But you see it, right? How badly I’d gone off course with what I believed. So badly that I’d thrown out every last bit of reason a human being should have.
And after going round and round in that loop, feeling like I was about to spiral into depression, suddenly it was as if a light had appeared and pulled me out of a deep abyss crawling with serpents.
I’ll tell you about that in EP3. I really wanted to wrap this up in two parts, but apparently my fucking life has other plans.
What happened was what first made me question things. But the reason I changed?
I met a new fortune teller.
You’re about to call me a dumb bitch, aren’t you? Hold on. I still believe in religion.
Just not the way I used to.
Writers are always hungry. Please show mercy.
