All right, today’s post requires reader discretion.
But if you don’t feel like using any discretion, that’s your fucking business.
Just read it for fun. If nothing else, maybe it’ll help you unwind after dealing with all the shitty people in your life.
Ghost stories are classics everywhere in the world. Nobody can prove any of this shit, but the internet is full of videos for people to argue over. Personally, I believe ghosts exist—based on experiences I still can’t explain. Were they really ghosts, or was my brain just being dramatic?
Fuck knows.
So, what exactly is a samphawesi?
I wasn’t completely sure myself, so I looked it up. In Buddhist terminology, samphawesi roughly means “a being seeking a new existence or place of birth.” It doesn’t necessarily mean an evil spirit, and it isn’t limited to wandering ghosts.
But in the way most Thai people use the word—and the way I’m using it in this story—a samphawesi is a wandering spirit that hasn’t been able to move on. Basically, someone who got lost along the way.
Their old life has ended, but they may still be worried, attached to something, or holding on to unfinished business. They might be too frightened or anxious to continue whatever journey comes next.
So they don’t always have to look like terrifying ghosts. They might simply be someone who still can’t let go of what they left behind.
Here comes my touching, teary-eyed moment.
Fuck. When you think about it that way, the living aren’t so different from samphawesi, are we?
Anyway, the story I’m about to tell you is fucking strange.
Looking back, I think I started dreaming about these spirits more than twenty years ago. My guess is that I was making a hell of a lot of merit at the time, and they wanted a share, so they started showing up in my dreams.
They never help me pay for anything, but they’re always ready to ask for a cut.
Awwww. Poor things.
In Thai belief, when we make merit, we can dedicate some of it to people who have died or to wandering spirits. It’s basically like saying, “I’ve done something good, so here—have some of my spiritual points.”
In the beginning, they appeared all rotten and mangled, like ghosts straight out of a horror movie.
Fuck, I still remember how terrified I was whenever I dreamed about them. I’d run for my life, and when I woke up, I’d go make merit and dedicate it to them.
Then one night, I had the same kind of dream again.
Dripping blood. Smashed-up faces. Fucking horrifying.
And there I was, running away from them all over again.
But listen—I’d been running for so long that I was exhausted and ready to explode at everyone.
For fuck’s sake, I hate running. I like weight training.
So I completely lost my shit and yelled at the samphawesi in my dream.
“If you’re going to show up looking like this, I’m not giving you any more merit. I’m fucking exhausted! If you come back like this again, I’ll curse you to stay in that pile of shit forever. No merit for you, and forget about being reborn. If you want something from me, come looking pretty. I appreciate beautiful things, for fuck’s sake. What century is this? Are you seriously still trying to scare people like it’s the early Rattanakosin era?”
Then I woke up pissed off.
And I genuinely did not make any merit for them that day.
Some of you reading this probably think I’m weird. But if you regularly have dreams like these, feel free to try my method.
No guarantees, though. You’re on your own, darling.
And that still wasn’t the end of it.
After they disappeared and left me alone for quite a while, my friends and I organized a big charity giveaway for people in my neighborhood.
I can’t remember whether we handed out eggs, rice, or something else, but I remember there was a lot of it.
I didn’t think much about it. Once the day was over, I went home and fell asleep.
And yes—
I HAD ANOTHER FUCKING DREAM.
But this time, they showed up differently. It was almost as though they were afraid of my mouth.
They didn’t appear with terrifying faces. There was no dripping blood, no intestines hanging out, and they didn’t show me their faces at all.
Instead, they appeared as Thai funerary stupas—the small structures you see at temples that hold a person’s ashes.
If I had to give you the closest visual reference, I’d say they looked like something from Wat Pho. The decorations on the stupas were in beautiful pastel colors.
In the dream, I was like—
Holy shit.
They were lined up all across the front of my house.
So many of them.
But I didn’t yell at them this time. I just woke up startled and suddenly remembered—
Oh, fuck. I forgot to share some of the merit with them. I’d already given things to the living; perhaps the spirits were feeling left out.
After that, I continued dreaming about them from time to time, but the atmosphere in those dreams became much nicer.
They started appearing as ordinary people, except I could never see their faces clearly. I could sense them saying something like, “Hey, where’s our merit for this month? Have you done it yet? Could you please get on with it?”
Something along those lines.
Then, two days ago, I dreamed that I was in some unfamiliar place. Everything looked completely normal. This time, I could clearly see everyone’s faces. People were strolling around casually as though we were somewhere public.
Then, out of nowhere, a younger person appeared beside me.
I have no idea when the fuck he got there.
He immediately told me to run.
“Quick, run! We have to hide!”
So I ran after him, confused as hell, and asked,
“What are we hiding from? Why are we running?”
He looked terrified. Then he said,
“Hide! They’re going to take me away.”
He pointed toward two or three men walking around outside.
But the moment he said they were going to take him away, something flashed through me and I immediately knew—
This kid was a samphawesi.
One of my regular visitors, only this time there had been some character development.
I wasn’t afraid of him anymore.
I didn’t feel as though he was trying to haunt me or take my life. He might not even have come to ask me for merit.
Maybe he simply wanted to show me how it felt to be a little lost spirit, drifting through a world I haven’t reached yet.
He might have been frightened, lost, and too scared to face whatever awaited him in the afterlife.
Honestly, I started tearing up in the dream.
I’m not fucking lying.
And then I woke up.
I woke up feeling sad because I hadn’t had the chance to tell him—
“Don’t be afraid. You have to face it. You can’t keep running forever. You don’t even know whether they’re taking you to heaven or hell.”
And if they really are taking you to hell, then just fucking go.
At least you’ll finally find out exactly how hot it is down there.
Do a little dance. Give them a little grind. Make an entrance.
Am I making hell sound a bit too much like a challenge?
Hahaha.
Still, it has to be better than running, hiding, and drifting around forever because you can’t move on.
To every living person and every wandering spirit who happens to read this post: I wish you good luck and a strong heart.
I’m rooting for you.
Go on. Fucking fight.
How terrifying could hell possibly be? You’ve already survived all the shitty people here in the human world.
Lord Yama might take you to hell, but at least he probably won’t scam you, manipulate you into falling in love, and then disappear without a word like a human being would.
And when I say that spirits might be reading this post, I genuinely believe they exist.
Some days, my laptop opens YouTube Music all by itself.
At least they have taste. They always pick something fabulous.
Other days, my fucking camera switches itself on while it’s still inside its cloth bag.
Hahaha. Fuck.
You’re using my electricity, my internet, and listening to music in my room—
the least you could do is help me pay the bills.
Writers are always hungry. Please show mercy.
